We all lose hair everyday - this is part of the natural hair growth cycle. 90% of our hair is in a growth stage with 10% in resting phase, which would fall out naturally every 2 or 3 months. When hair loss exceeds the normal limit, people tend to get concerned. These include: Why does hair loss take place? Alopecia areata – Affects both males and females; hair loss is rapid and the most common pattern is one or more spots of hair loss on the scalp. Generally caused due to immunity disorder where the body’s own white blood cells attack the hair follicles. Alopecia Totalis is another condition where there is total loss of hair on the scalp. Alopecia Universalis is a rare condition when the entire body hair is lost. Procerin is effective in reversing hair loss in men caused by androgenetic alopecia, the most common cause of male hair loss.
Hereditary causes: This can result in male pattern baldness which causes 25% of men getting bald by age 30. Though the reason is genetic another contributing factor is testosterone the male hormone. Testosterone converts to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which retards or stops hair growth and causes the emergence of weak or shorter hair. Male pattern baldness can not happen to men without any testosterone.
Skin diseases: hair loss and affectation of the scalp can also happen due to this. Some of the skin diseases include dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungus such as ringworm and tinea captis.
Sudden illness or fever: big chunks of hair sometimes fall out after an illness or fever. However, this only lasts for a little time.
Other causes of hair loss include; Childbirth, The Menopause, Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy and Age. Though these are the primary reasons for hair loss, there could be several others also.
Hair loss can often be treated successfully; not only can you stop hair from falling but you can re-grow hair as well. Some ways you could treat hair loss naturally are:
1. Have plenty of vitamins A, B, C and E. These promote new hair growth. What is the importance of these vitamins? They not only provide sebum, they also help in increase of blood circulation to the scalp by absorbing more oxygen and collagen.
2. Taking care of your scalp: Learn to massage your scalp regularly with herbal oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. These include: essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.
3. Avoid scalp abuse - Avoid daily use of chemical shampoos and blow drying. Hair and scalp get damaged by chemical treatments such as coloring and straightening. Even a daily hair wash with hot water can damage hair as well as the scalp with the drying up of natural oils and hair breaking easily.
4. Using herbal care: Using powders of amla, shikakai, henna and ritha as shampoo and conditioner can be an effective treatment. Amla powder is a powerful natural anti-oxidant that prevents graying and hair loss and is the richest known source of vitamin C in natural form. If you want a thorough hair cleanser which does not rob hair of its natural oil, choose Shikakai, also know as the Fruit for hair. Henna then acts as a natural conditioner.
5. Lifestyle - Stress is a very important factor in hair loss. Try and reduce stress by meditating and exercising. Give up Smoking: Smoking causes constriction of the blood vessel which supply blood to the scalp. To avoid damage to the scalp avoid UV rays from sun exposure.
